What playing this feels like

Grand Commander does not hand over a single character. Several units move at once under your orders, which shifts the difficulty away from accuracy and onto how the force is arranged before contact is made.

Once the fighting starts there is far less time to issue orders than expected. Shifting a unit from one flank to the other almost always arrives late. Players who win regularly decide beforehand which flank they are willing to lose, and concentrate strength where they actually intend to win, rather than spreading everything evenly and hoping.

The other layer to read is unit type: what can absorb punishment belongs at the front, what reaches furthest belongs behind. That sounds elementary, yet in the middle of a scrap most people send something fragile forward without noticing and lose the whole line in seconds.
